9 Tips To Help You Enjoy Kayaking

How To Launch A Kayak

When it comes to kayaking, all you really need is a kayak, your paddles, and a little water. However, there are a few things that might make your time on the river or lake more enjoyable.

1)) Find A Good Fitting Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

A lifejacket is a must-have for your time on the water, and having one that fits properly is not only safer, but it’s also more comfortable.

Your lifejacket should fit snugly, but not so tight that you can’t breathe. When you sit down, the PFD should remain in place and not bunch up.

Some models of lifejackets come with pockets for storage, as well as a built-in whistle for emergencies.

2)) Get A Comfortable Seat

This one is easy to overlook until you’re two hours into a four-hour float and your back is in shambles.

If your kayak has removable seats, you can replace the factory seat with a more comfortable aftermarket one.

If your kayak has built-in seats, a good cushion might provide better back support than hard plastic.

Either way, a more comfortable seat will make for a much more enjoyable paddle.

3)) Apply Sunscreen Regularly

This one might seem like common sense, but it can’t be overstated. Apply sunscreen as often as directed by the packaging.

Nothing will sour your day on the water quite like a blistering sunburn on your shoulders and legs.

It increases your chances of skin cancer, and it even the most liberal applications of aloe don’t really take the pain away.

4)) Bring Extra Water

Gather up how much water you think you need, and then bring some more. Being out in the direct sunlight dehydrates you faster, and it’s important to replenish your fluids.

As a general rule of thumb, take a drink or two of water every fifteen minutes while out on the water.

5)) Wear Gloves

Kayaker’s gloves will help protect your hands. When your paddle’s handle gets wet, that moisture can cause blisters on your hands. Gloves keep your hands dry and protected, as well as providing extra grip.

6)) Bring A Waterproof Bag

Even the most careful kayaker can’t keep water from coming in the boat at times. If you don’t want your phone, car keys, and other valuables to get wet, keep them in a waterproof bag.

These bags are available at most sporting goods stores.

7)) Tie Down Your Stuff

Tipping is sometimes unavoidable. Maybe the river current picked up, or maybe you just took a turn a little too hard.

Either way, kayakers of all skill levels occasionally tip. To keep your gear from floating down the river on its own, be sure to keep your stuff tied up or stashed away in your kayak’s dry compartment.

8)) Bring A Change Of Shoes And Clothes For Later

Most of the time, kayaking involves getting wet– even if it’s just from the paddle splashing you.

A change of clothes and shoes will help ensure that you aren’t miserable once you get off the water.

You might not need them, but if you do get soaked, you’ll be grateful to have something dry to change into.

9)) Enjoy The Sounds Of Nature

It can be tempting to blast music on your phone as you float down the river. But before you do, take a few minutes to enjoy the natural sounds around you.

You may hear migratory birds that are passing through your area, fish splashing around, or wind rustling through leaves on trees.

Kayaking is a unique way to experience nature and taking the time to soak it all in can add to the experience.
